Alvor
The village of Alvor nestles in a sheltered bay midway between Portimao
and Lagos. Alvor is a a typical Algarvian fishermen's village with narrow cobbled
streets leading to the picturesque wetlands area with a lifeboat station, a fish market, traditional restaurants lining the
old fisherman quay and dozens of colourful fishing boats bobbing at anchor on the natural
lagoon with wonderful views of the Atlantic Ocean. Alvor village is a pleasant mixture of old and new, traditional and
comtempory.
Alvor is perhaps best known for its PRAIA DE ALVOR, a wide beach boasting
15 kilometres of golden sand, with an EU Blue Flag award for safety, cleanliness and quality of facilities offered.
The beach is backed by sand dunes and is ideal for sunbathing (sunbeds/shades available for hire) or the more energetic of
you can take advantage of the watersports offered (in season). The beach can also accommodate ball games or
you can just stroll along the waters edge soaking up the sun and the sound of the waves. Alternatively take a break
in the excellent restaurants/cafes edging the coastline for a casual drink or meal.
At the centre of the village is a delightful 16th century church worthy of a
visit to view probably the finest example of delicately carved Manueline portico on the Algarve and excellent azulejos in
the chancel, and is the only building to survive the earthquake of 1755.
